Nothing about this texture was added after the fact, it was there from the very first stretch of the wax. Mitsuro Hikime is an ancient Japanese method, and it works by warming wax in the hand and drawing it out slowly, again and again, until it settles into lines and ridges that look almost grown rather than made. The wax never moves in quite the same way twice, so the pattern it leaves behind can't be repeated. What you see in this ring is the one and only time this particular pattern happened.
For the Leaf Crossover with Curl, two tapering points were shaped from that same hand-stretched wax, crossing over each other near the top of the band. One sweeps past in a long, gentle curve, while the other tightens into a small hook, the way a tendril sometimes curls back on itself once it's done climbing. The band stays slim and rounded throughout, so the ring sits comfortably either way up. Once the wax form was right, it was cast in sterling silver and finished by hand, keeping every line from the wax visible in the metal.
A note from Lizzy on this collection:
So much has gone into this new collection, and a big change in the way I work, but with it a new found love for working with wax. I love that I could create pieces I have often thought of. Working with flowers and being inspired by your stories and by nature is wonderful, but there was a little part of me that wanted to explore new ways of representing nature: the texture and the observations that come with working with flowers and growing them from seed. The new collection is a representation of nature that I could never capture in dried form. It connects my love for art, texture, nature and jewellery into one form.
Details:
Style: Two crossing leaf-like points, one curling into a hook, can be worn either way up
Inspiration: Crossing leaves and curling tendrils found in nature
Technique: Mitsuro Hikime, hand-formed in wax, then cast
Materials: Solid sterling silver
Band width: 5mm at the thickest point
Size: N½
Handmade: In the UK studio, one off piece, never repeated
As this is a one-of-a-kind piece in size N½, once it's gone, it's gone. If you'd like a similar crossover design made in a different size, get in touch to discuss a bespoke commission.
A lovely gift for someone who loves nature, individuality, and jewellery with real story behind it.
